BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WINDOW

ACTION ACTIVITY:            Animal Care:  Treehouse Wildlife Center

Research indicates that the bond that exists between the student and the teacher is directly proportional to the students’ willingness to absorb information presented.  Understanding this concept, the learning strategy called Beyond The Classroom Window utilizes action activities designed to promote, enhance or reinforce this bond.  Proper preparation and application of this strategy creates an atmosphere of “family.”  Discipline problems are replaced with a desire for learning adventure.

Illinois Learning Standards:  State Science Goals #11, 12, and 13 tie directly into this activity.

Equipment required for this activity:

Depending upon the arrangements you make with Treehouse, students will require variable clothing.   Normal clothing is appropriate for the grand tour; however, should you desire to take small groups for a work day, they will need to wear clothes that can get very dirty.  Student volunteers actually work hand-in-hand with the animals (feeding, cleaning, etc.).

Special Note:     I have taken students to Treehouse for more than twenty years.  The volunteers are exceptional.  Upon completion of your service at Treehouse, you may wish to run a fundraiser to help out with animal care.  This is an experience of a lifetime for your animal loving students.
